Today brings an interesting convergence of events. Not only is it the day before Halloween (All Hallows Eve Eve?) but it is also National Candy Corn Day AND etiquette maven Emily Post’s birthday. And a Friday to boot. Wow. Have a seat and a sip of water, that’s a lot to take in.

Let’s address them in reverse order.

4) Friday – yay!

3) This will be an unpopular view but I wish that more people practiced etiquette. But not the stuffy, rules-bound behavioral dictates from years gone by, more ‘golden rule’ and doing unto others. When given a choice, opt for kindness. Pro tip: There's almost always a choice. Happy Birthday to Emily Post, a lady of taste and style who used dry humor to write about employing good manners in polite society. She died in 1960 at the age of 87, but her legacy lives on.

2) Ah, candy corn … my nemesis. We meet again. I am a woman of many weaknesses, and as such am not permitted to be within sniffing distance of an open bag of candy corn or else …. nom nom nom snarf nom, something comes over me all wolfman-like. Sugary goodness, awooooooooo! So Happy National Candy Corn Day to one and all, but please eat it way over there, where I can neither see nor smell it.

Continue to the next page (click Read More below) for the #1 event of the day AND an awesome spooky playlist courtesy of (and in honor and memory of) my sister-in-law Leslie.

1) Everyone’s Halloween history is different, but for me this holiday has always meant big fun. From carefully planned costumes as a child, including once as a tiny maharajah; to wild Halloween house parties with artsy, theater types during high school, college and my 20s; to the present day when decorating the front porch and greeting trick-or-treaters is a highly anticipated event.

Ilise maintains a candy acquisition spreadsheet (of course she does!) tracking year over year quantities purchased/ distributed, price per ounce, and the all-important ratio of chocolate vs other candies. Do we know how to have fun or what?!

Ilise’s sister Leslie passed away a little more than two years ago. She was a woman of many talents, passions, moods and quirks, all of which she threw herself into wholeheartedly, bringing her friends and family along for the ride.

She loved all aspects of Halloween: witches and casting spells and dancing in the moonlight; scare-yourself-silly viewings of B-movies like Frankenstein Meets the Mummy and The Creature from the Black Lagoon; cute cartoons like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown; and of course the accessories – Leslie was known to rock the cat ears headband from time to time.

I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately, having recently found a playlist she created featuring songs about witches, magic and spooky stuff.

Please hit Play and turn it up loud – this is definitely a Treat for your goodie bag this Halloween weekend!

Big smile on my face reading this! Ilise's spreadsheet? Classic. And of COURSE you decorate and celebrate with the neighborhood. You probably are legends with the kids. Have fun!

If you really want to smile, listen to Leslie's playlist. Lots of great tunes from yesteryear, and it's just. so. Leslie. In terms of Halloween house decor, we're probably in the mid range compared to others in the neighborhood -- some have yard + porch displays, animatronic statues with motion detectors, soundtracks playing through hidden speakers. I mean they go ALL OUT. I say, too much work but cool to look at!
