Kitchen Reno: Week 3 – Humpty Dumpty Sat on (Dry)Wall

For the past two weeks I've lamented long and loud about construction dust. Well. I’m here to tell you that demolition dust has nothing on drywall dust. Sticky, gritty and pervasive. It’s everywhere and it’s nasty. Luckily there’s only one more day to go for this phase of the project.

Things are coming together nicely. As you’ll see in the photos on the next page (click Read More below) our kitchen once again looks like a finished room (ok, partially finished) rather than a ramshackle old barn on the verge of falling down. Here’s a rundown of this week’s work:

  • Exterior stucco repair around the new windows
  • Re-routing the space pak tubes that provide our central air conditioning and build-out of a soffit to hold them in place
  • Insulation
  • Drywall
  • And a new archway between the kitchen and dining room which replaces the old swinging door

The crew has also removed the oh-so-attractive dropped ceilings in a hallway and powder room near the kitchen. We are NEVER going to take on a project like this again, so figured we might as well get it all taken care of at the same time.

Please continue to the next page for photos and a preview of Week 4 activities.

The coming week’s work includes installation of a hardwood floor and delivery of the new cabinets. We’re super-excited to see the cabinets as we’ve made some non-traditional color choices, with a warm medium-brown wood for the majority and slate blue/gray painted wood for the upper cabinets and an accent piece or two. I sure hope we like this combo as much in person as we did during the materials-selection phase!

Tune in again in a few days for another renovation update. I'm wishing you (and me) a dust-free week!

It's all coming together. You're lucky to have all those windows -- makes for a bright working space (as long as there's air conditioning).
The arch is great! Who needs a door swinging to hit you from behind as you carry in your prize casserole!

I'm a big fan of those wide open windows too. Trying to figure out what kind of window treatment will provide some privacy but appear too fussy or block overly much of the expanse. Any ideas?

I like the shades you can pull up from the bottom so you can still have light and not everyone can see your business!
Way to live with the dust!
We just had the tub area of our bath redone and it was 18 days and I almost killed myself with the dust and men in my house. You all are going on 3+ weeks. Hang in there sister!

Good idea about those top-down, bottom-up shades. We'll be getting advice and competitive quotes from a couple of window treatment companies next week and I'll ask about this option. Thanks!

Archway looks fantastic! Did i know you were doing work in guest bathroom, too?

Not much work in the powder room at all, just taking advantage of having the workers in the house to lose the hideous dropped ceilings and re-drywall the damage. Once the low ceilings are gone, it's hard to remember that they were ever there. A subtle difference but an important one!
