Kitchen Reno: Week 5 Recap – What’s Cookin’?

Well, nothing’s cooking just yet, we’ve got at least a few more weeks of sandwiches, cereal and take-out to look forward to before our pretty new kitchen is functional. But the appliances were installed this week and I’m getting super-excited already thinking about what to cook first.

And honestly, can you blame me? This has to be the cutest little wall oven ever, amirite?!

The wall oven, range top, and ventilation hood are from Blue Star, an American-made, restaurant-quality line of appliances for the residential market, as they say in their marketing copy. Although my culinary skills are laughably far from Michelin-level, I wanted professional grade kitchen equipment like the real chefs use, and the oven had to be gas. (Surprisingly hard to find in a wall oven.)

The range top has a 25,000 BTU power burner, a low-heat simmer burner, and a griddle in the middle. Awesome! Plus you can customize your look from a palette of over 700 colors. Once we learned that, there was no going back.

This week’s renovation recap comes a little earlier than usual because we’re now on a bit of a break while the countertops are being cut to measure. There will still be some work done onsite – electrical panel clean-up, tiling the mudroom floor – but for the next 7-10 days we and the contractors will have a little quality time apart from each other. I think it will be good for our relationship.

The week’s activities included installation of radiators, appliances, window trim and ceiling fan plus all of the cabinetry work that can be done before the countertops go in. Take a look.

Although there's still a ways to go yet, it feels as though we turned a corner this week and we're thrilled with what we see. Big thanks to our designer and project manager, Kelly Thayer at Kitchens and Baths Unlimited for her great eye, her willingness to play with color and make non-traditional choices, and for her easygoing style which makes it a pleasure to work with her.

Next week Ilise and I have to finalize decisions about paint color, window treatments and kitchen stools. There really is no rest for the wicked! Tune in next week for another renovation recap.
