Kitchen Reno: Week One – Ohmigosh What Have We Done!

Last week I was wishing real hard that the kitchen renovation project would hurry up and get started. Well, now I’m wishing even more fervently that it was done already. Everyone was pretty clear about how chaotic (and dirty and noisy and generally disruptive) it was going to be and they sure weren’t lying.

Demolition started on Monday and by the end of Day 3 an enormous dumpster had already been filled to the brim. Rough work is now underway for the electrical and heating systems. Of course there have been a few surprises (none of them especially good) which is to be expected in a house that’s more than 100 years old. But we’ve got a great design/build team from Kitchens and Baths Unlimited at the helm who assure us that all will be well. (I might need to hear that a few hundred more times, Kelly, but I really do want to believe!)

Check out the photos on the next page.

Next week will feature plumbing, window replacement, stucco repair and ideally a visit from the building inspector before the walls get sealed up again. Hopefully there will be far less construction dust than there has been this week, caking every blessed thing (and person) in our home with layers of sticky, stinky grit.

Wish us luck, and tune in again late next week for another kitchen reno update. Have you survived a major renovation project? Share your coping tips in the Comments -- please!

Oh my!! What in the world did you do with all of your stuff? And where are you eating during the renovation?

We did a major pack-up in advance and now have boxes stacked everywhere throughout the house. We have a second stove and fridge in the basement, moved the microwave down there as well, so that serves us pretty well as a back-up kitchen. It's pretty dirty/dusty though, so I'm not sure how much "real" cooking we'll be doing. Probably more grab-and-go and take-out for a while.

That is a smart move to get a dumpster. My wife and I need to remodel our house. We'll have to rent out a dumpster ourselves.
