Kitchen Reno: Week 8 Recap – Floor It!

This week’s musical accompaniment is a classic psychedelic rock number selected because the fumes from the super-strong varnish used to finish the hardwood floor induced more than a few spacey head-trips.* Breathe deep the gathering gloom and expand your mind. Far out, man!

As to the headline, we’re flooring it because now the Renovation Finish Line is in sight, just another lap around the track. Step on the gas and start waving that checkered flag!

I don’t want to jinx anything but we’re probably only 2 weeks from completion, at least as far as the contractors are concerned. (Window treatments and bar stools are another matter.) The new hardwood floor was sanded, stained and finished this week, and the painter will do his thing next week. Then a few more punch list items and we’ll be back to cooking in no time. If we can stand to dirty up our pretty new kitchen, that is.

* Check out the alternate musical selection as well as this week’s photos after the jump.

A small section of the dining room floor was replaced at the same time the new floor was installed in the kitchen 3-4 weeks ago. Luckily Ilise was smart enough to save the floor stain from 13 years ago when we moved in, ripped up the eggplant-colored carpets and redid the floors. There was enough left and still in good condition, so the floor guys were able to easily blend the new DR floor with the old, and then the whole thing flows nicely into the kitchen through the new archway. A few coats of toxic-smelling varnish later and we’ve got lovely, shiny floors in a warm medium-honey-brown tone.

How long will they remain unscuffed? As the Tootsie Roll Owl says, "Let's find out. One ... two-hoo ... three. crunch. Three!" In our case that might mean 3 days, 3 weeks ... I'm certain we can't go 3 years without scuffed floors. But I have a hunch these beauties will still be stunners even with a lived-in look.

Come back next week for another Kitchen Renovation Recap. Read previous recaps here.

* This song was a strong second choice to lead this post, for obvious reasons.
