eighth blackbird combines the finesse of a string quartet, the energy of a rock band and the audacity of a storefront theater company. The Chicago-based, three-time Grammy-winning “super-musicians” (LA Times) entertain and provoke audiences across the country and around the world.
Are you familiar with eighth blackbird? I have only recently become aware of their genre-intermingling, label-defying artistic presence, and now I’m fascinated and want more of this contemporary classical music sextet. Their website describes them thusly:
They were just here performing at the Old Town School of Folk Music and for one silly reason or another I didn’t go. In between kicking myself, I am now repeat-watching these captivating videos of the ensemble performing, first, as Commedia dell’ Arte characters in “Colombine’s Paradise Theatre”, and as part of a delightful and unusual shadow puppet show in the second video. Even though they’re musicians, this kind of out-there, old+new, throw yourself into it creative experience -- this is why I went into the arts and why the hairs on my neck stand up during the very best live performances. This is cool stuff, and I hope you enjoy it.
